FAS1102 Module Review

FAS1102 Public Writing and Communication

AY2016/17 Semester 2

Taught by Dr. Namala (Sectional Group, not lecture)

Weekly Readings

Had an 8am class. Was also the semester I started cycling to school. Not great.

On the bright side, Dr. Namala was a great tutor with an unorthodox teaching style that aptly fit the more informal writing required in this course. I wholeheartedly believe that this class was what catalysed my deviation from my characteristically rigid writing style.

The assignments were much simpler than FAS1101’s (to me at least), requiring the eponymous public writing and communication (i.e., presentation skills). There was a 25% group blog post assignment, requiring us to make a blog post about a social issue (we picked migrant workers). It didn’t seem like any of us really felt for the topic though, so it came as no surprise that we scored averagely (~75%) for the blog post. There was also a 25% presentation on said blog post, which we did slightly better in.

I don’t quite remember the breakdown of the remaining assignments, only that there was a movie review (related to the social issue we picked) and class participation (I was the only one who prepared the weekly work in advance, got max points). Dr. Namala stressed the importance of creativity in the review, and creativity she received. It was one of my favourite assignments in year 1 (86/100 :D).

I’m getting a nagging feeling that I’ve missed out one component but for the life of me I can’t recall what it was. Sorry about that.

Glad I finally didn’t get an A- for a writing module (A).
