GES1035 Module Review

GES1035 Singapore – Imagining the Next 50 Years

AY2017/18 Semester 2

Taught by Dr. Noorman Abdullah

Weekly Readings

Was finally down to my last pillar for GEMs. As I’ve mentioned before, I really hate essays in finals but most, if not all, GES mods had all-essay finals. No bueno. This mod though, this mod, was a thing of absolute beauty. I initially wanted to take it in the previous semester but was severely outbid.

Electures, pass/fail, tutorials every 2 weeks, and no exams (well, kind of). Glorious.

The content revolved around five themes that I have no recollection of. What I do remember was that they were related to important issues that are likely problems we will face in the next half century.

The module doesn’t have a formal final examination in that it concludes in week 13, nothing else beyond that. However, it concludes with a final “quiz” that accounts for 30% of your score. Didn’t need to worry too much since it was just MCQs and short answer questions, like really short. I think they only provided 3 lines per question.

However, note that many people who take this aren’t exactly aiming for an A because there is no A to aim for. So if you’re the paranoid but conscientious type, you’ll probably experience quite a bit of angst for the 30% group presentation.

Another 30% came from a short 500-word critical reflection, which just required us to find one part of the electures we watched to critique. Don’t have to get too specific, especially with that word limit. Offer a cogent 2-sided argument for whatever your stand is and you should do fine.

As for the last 10%… Just needed to do the readings and submit 5x index cards of critical questions we had regarding the readings.

  1. Oh man made a mistake with the previous comment on a wrong thread so im posting again =/

Hi, fully appreciate the helpful review, but would like to confirm once more that this module is a pass/fail module with no grades?

    1. I can’t say for sure, but when I took the module there was no prescribed or proscribed format to follow. If nothing has changed, then following such a format might be advantageous to you because of the organization it affords.

      1. There was no default/basic template provided to me specifically, but your tutor may give you a helpful guideline. Generally, as long as you show critical thinking and thoughtful reflection, you will do fine.
